Orphan Care

Sponsoring The Orphans

Introduction:

Since the fall of the last central government of Somalia on January 1991, the country did not provide unified public and or social services. The most vulnerablevictims were orphans, single mothers, and low income or no income families. The orphans and their single parents did not receive basic necessities to sustain their lives. There were some relief organizations locallyand internationally who wereassistingsmall percentage of the orphanage families. However, the violence and particularly the indiscriminate bombing of civilian populatedareas such as markets, busy junctions, hotels, and restaurantstakethe lives and limbs of many men and women. The majority of these affected civilians are the breadwinners of their families. As a result, many families lose their main breadwinners. These attacks are vile and vicious by nature. The most destructive attack occurred October 14, 2017 at Zobe junction, a very busy and bustling market area. The truck bomb detonated right in the midst of hundreds of civilians. According to the government reports, the causalities rose to 358 fatalities, injuring more than 400 civilians. Few days after that was another bombing and attack on Nasahablood Hotel, another busy area where more than two-dozencivilians lost their lives. Therefore, the number of orphanage families is ever increasing through natural and man caused deaths and destructions.

HARO Campaign

Humanitarian African Relief Organization (HARO) has launched a campaign to aid affected families, so they can sustain their livelihoods. The selection of families is based on specific criterion of an aggregate consideration of their financial status. The most vulnerable will be the most beneficiaries of this project of “SPONSORING THE ORPHANS”.

HARO’s approach is to support and cater to orphans in their homes not in orphanage boarding schools. The reason we chose this process is to keep the orphans in the care of their immediate families. The office of HARO in Mogadishu has worked immensely to identify and enlist families who qualify for this program, and so far, submitted to us 24 families averaging from 2 to 8 members per household.

These families will be fully sponsored by HARO in food, shelter, clothing, education (up to high school), and healthcare. The expenses to cover their cost of living per month is calculated below:

#Household

Per month

Per Year

2-3

$200.00

$2400.00

4-5

$300.00

$3600.00

6-8

$350.00

$$4200.00

9 plus

$400.00

$4800.00

The Criterion:

 HARO will specifically sponsor:

  • Children under 18 years of age.
  • Families that lack sufficient assets that can cover their livelihoods.
  • Families with no absolute support (i.e. other family members, relatives, organizations, government agencies, etc.).

After fulfilling this criterion, each family has to follow someof the following procedures to verify all the information necessary to qualify for the sponsorship:

  • Each family has to be known and recommended by a trustworthy individual, and or organization.
  • Each family has to fill the sponsorship form fully, completely and to the best of their knowledge.

After meeting all conditions, HAR’s office in Mogadishu will start distributing the sponsorship amount on a monthly basis. Also, the office will be responsible to set a system to monitor the education, nutrition, healthcare and the general wellbeing of the orphanage families.

Finally, the sponsors of each family or person will be able to see limited records of the beneficiaries of their donations.

Negative impacts include: loss of land, loss of structure, loss of livelihood.

The last few decades the children of Somalia have suffered the result of ongoing war and violence and that made them orphans. Every camp you visit, you will find number of children with nobody to give them any care but HARO has visited Beedle camp and found orphans that go to local "childcare" center in the middle of the camp and gave every child some cash. The president of HARO (Ali Abdinur) has handed them more than 1,0000 Somali Shillings.

Airport camp is an extension of all camps that are located inside Mogadishu. The President of HARO (Ali Abdinur) has visited many camps including this camp and delivered very much needed to the suffering people of Mogadishu. The aid consisted of rice, floor and cooking oil as these were most needed commodities at this time.

HMMT (Haro Medical Mobile Team) is group of students from top universities in Mogadishu whom are pursuing  the department of health came together to work with HARO and help the people who are in need the most when it comes to health. The people were very grateful for this great step which HARO has took toward bettering the people East Africa. The HMMT has cured more than 100s of people and mostly were the elders.

As group of people gather in one place, the need for healthy environment is eminent to prevent the spread of germs and diseases.  HARO has installed bathrooms in camp Beedle to make the refugee camp healthier and cleaner. The people used to defecate on any hidden place and the germs used spread like wildfire.

Imagine living under huts that neither protect you from sun nor rain. The people of camp beedle and all the camps live under this condition and the need for tents was great. HARO has took the initiative to install tents to camp beedle for the families that needed the most. These people need your help and the help of everyone.

In this camp, the number of children who died due to malnutrition was staggering  and the number of families who were coming to this camp was exponentially increasing. At the time when HARO has delivered it's aid, there were more than 550 families that needed immediate humanitarian relief. HARO has fed all the families with more than 50 pounds of food per family.

Camp Mina is located in Mogadishu and the number of people who were coming to the camp has being increasing since the drought has started. HARO has got there and distributed food to more than 400 families.

At this refugee camp, the people have fled from very violent part of the country and they left everything they had because they wanted a safe place. There were more than 1500 families at this camp with children and women that walked many miles. Also there were men who couldn't help their family because they were tortured and their hands were amputated. The HARO team gave visit and fed all the families at this camp with more than 100 pounds of food each family.

As for all other camps in Banadir region, Raaxoole had many refugees from many parts of the country. The people in this camp needed immediate help and aid from anyone and HARO took your donation to help these people. There were more than 600 families in this camp and HARO has helped them all with more than 50 pounds of food.

You might think this camp is located at place where there is a river but that is not the case, the name doesn't reflect the reality of this camp. The people have suffered lack of food, water and basic needs of human being. With more than 1000 families at the camp, any humanitarian aid would not be sufficient but HARO has took it's part and delivered more than 100 pounds of food and 6 liters of cooking oil.

Diinsoor is one of those places where the drought has hit hard and most of the residents have fled to Mogadishu for any kind relief but the people who remained in Diinsoor such as the elders and the children had being forgotten and HARO has sent its agent from Nairobi Ibraahim Mohamud Mohamed to bring relief to those people.

Gurbaan is village that comes under Diinsoor City which is in Bay region. There were more than 1000 families in Gurbaan and most of them used farm and used their livestock for varies things such as meat and milk. But the minute the drought has hit them, it was as if they had never had any farms or livestock. HARO had came to help and fed more than 500 families.

It was that time of the year when Muslims do udhiyah (animal sacrifice). As usual, HARO delivers your udhiyah to the most needy every year. This year (2011), we have made udhiyah in Hiiraan and Banadir regions with more than 500 families fed.

Jamaame is populated city in Lower Jubba. The river and the farms were the main source of livelihood for the people of Jamaame but when the drought has came the families lost everything they had and needed urgent assistance of food and shelter.
